A career in gastronomy is an amazing discipline that combines creativity, culinary knowledge and skills. During a gastronomy degree you can learn about cooking techniques, ingredients and coordination with colleagues. The career offers opportunities in the culinary industry.
What is gastronomy?
The word comes from the Greek (γαστρονομία), it is divided into two words (gastro) or “gaster” meaning stomach and (nomy) or “gnome” meaning norm or rule. Gastronomy is the discipline that studies the relationship of human beings with food and the environment. The gastronome is the individual who is concerned with this discipline. Gastronomy itself is concerned with the connection between people, their culture and food. In addition, it can include aspects of nutrition, food chemistry, and the pairing of wines and other types of beverages with different dishes.
Areas of specialization:
Gastronomy has several areas but the ones that stand out the most are: international and regional cuisine, pastry and confectionery, nutrition, and bakery among others. Each area has its own specialization but we can highlight that by specializing in one of these areas, they help to make food preparation more focused on food while contributing to the industry.
Importance and relevance:
Gastronomy has significant importance in society along with life. Culturally, gastronomy shares and influences our traditions and customs of our countries or surroundings. Economically, it drives the food and beverage industry, generating employment. In tourism, it attracts visitors interested in experiencing local cuisine. In health, it promotes healthy eating habits. But let's not forget that it is always a field of culinary creativity and innovation where one can have fun creating new things using one's own techniques and ingredients.
Career prospects:
The jobs one can find in the area of gastronomy are various as are some: restaurants, hospitals, bars, schools, hotels, own business, media, vineyards, among others. As the culinary industry grows the jobs one can eventually find will be many and varied while offering opportunities for innovation, creativity and growth.

A career in gastronomy combines creativity, culinary knowledge and practical skills, teaching cooking techniques, use of ingredients and team coordination, which opens up numerous opportunities in the culinary industry.
